Sizing the Equipment Is Only Half the Job

A correctly sized AC connected to badly designed ductwork will not perform like the tag on the unit says it should. We spend as much time planning duct design as we do calculating tonnage, because the ductwork is what actually delivers the air the equipment produces. Get the equipment right and the ducts wrong, and you still end up with a house that has one hot bedroom and a system that runs longer than it should.

What Duct Design Actually Covers

Duct design is not just running metal or flex duct from the air handler to each room. It covers:

  • - The size of each supply run, based on how much airflow that specific room needs and how far the air has to travel
  • Return air sizing, since a system that cannot pull enough air back in cannot push enough air back out, no matter how big the supply side is
  • Register placement, so conditioned air lands where people actually sit and sleep, not just wherever a run happened to reach
  • Static pressure across the whole system, which is the resistance the blower has to push against to move air through the ducts
  • Balancing dampers, so airflow can be tuned room by room after the system is running

Skip any one of these steps and the whole system underperforms, even with correctly sized equipment on the other end.

Why Culver City's Older Homes Complicate Duct Design

A lot of Culver City housing was built between the 1940s and 1960s, and the original galvanized steel ductwork in these homes was laid out for the heating and cooling equipment of that era, not for how modern systems move air. When we install new equipment into an older home, we do not assume the existing duct layout is correct just because it is there. We check duct sizing against what the new system actually needs to deliver, room by room.

In a lot of cases, the original trunk line is undersized for a system with real Manual J calculated tonnage, or key branch runs were never sized to reach an addition built decades after the original ductwork went in. A post-war bungalow near Culver City Park is a common example: the front rooms connect to short, direct runs off the main trunk, while a back bedroom added later ties into a longer run that was never upsized to handle the added distance. That back bedroom stays warmer no matter what equipment sits outside.

Register Placement Is Not an Afterthought

Where a supply register sits in a room changes how that room actually feels, independent of how much air the duct delivers. A register placed too close to a return can short circuit airflow, pulling conditioned air back out before it mixes through the room. A register aimed directly at a couch or a bed creates a cold spot right where someone sits, while the rest of the room lags behind. We plan register placement based on room layout and how the space gets used, not just the nearest convenient spot to run duct.

Static Pressure: The Number Most Homeowners Never Hear About

Every duct system creates resistance against the blower trying to push air through it. That resistance is static pressure, and if it runs too high, the blower works harder than it should, wears out faster, and moves less air than the system is capable of delivering. Undersized ducts, too many sharp turns, and long runs with no straight sections all drive static pressure up. We measure static pressure as part of the design, not as a diagnostic step we only take once something is already wrong.

Multi-Family Buildings in Palms and West Los Angeles

Multi-family buildings change this equation. Palms carries a heavy concentration of older apartment and condo stock, and so does the stretch of West Los Angeles running through Sawtelle toward Santa Monica Boulevard, much of it sharing ductwork systems that were original to the building when it went up. Designing new duct runs inside a building like that means working around limits a single-family house never has to deal with: shared chases that snake between units, ceiling space that runs out fast, and access that has to get coordinated with whoever lives next door. In a lot of these buildings, extending or resizing ductwork for one unit just is not practical, which is a big part of why a ductless mini split, with no ductwork involved at all, ends up being the more workable path.

What Happens When Duct Design Gets Skipped

We get called into homes where a previous install connected new, correctly sized equipment straight onto the existing ductwork without ever checking whether that ductwork could handle it. The result looks like an equipment problem: uneven rooms, a system that runs long cycles, higher bills than expected. But the equipment is doing exactly what it was told to do. The ducts just cannot deliver what the equipment is producing. Reworking the duct design after the fact costs more than planning it correctly during the original install, since it means opening up finished spaces to correct runs that should have been sized right the first time.

Sealing Comes After Design, Not Instead of It

A sealed duct that was never sized correctly still underperforms. Sealing stops air from escaping through gaps and rust holes, which matters, but it does not fix a trunk line that is too small for the system connected to it or a return that cannot keep up with the supply side. We check both together, the physical condition of the ductwork and whether the sizing itself matches the equipment, before recommending sealing, resizing, or a mix of both.

Sizing the Trunk Line, Not Just the Branches

The main trunk line carrying air from the air handler is where a lot of duct design mistakes start, because undersizing it affects every branch run downstream at once. A trunk sized for the wrong total airflow starves whichever branches sit farthest from the air handler first, since air takes the path of least resistance and the rooms closest to the unit get served before the ones at the end of the line. We size the trunk for the full system airflow before working out branch sizes, then size each branch off how much of that total the specific room needs. Transition fittings, where duct size steps down from the trunk to a branch, matter here too. A sharp, abrupt transition creates turbulence that adds resistance the blower has to overcome, while a gradual transition keeps air moving efficiently toward the room it is headed for.

What a Properly Designed Duct System Delivers

A duct system designed around the actual equipment and the actual rooms it serves does a few things a mismatched system cannot. Every room reaches the thermostat setting at roughly the same rate. The blower runs within its rated range instead of fighting excess resistance. And the equipment lasts longer, because it is not working against ductwork that undermines its output every day it runs.
